This article examines two aspects of preservice English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) teacher education programs: (1) the knowledge base or information that students must learn; and (2) the way or ways in which the knowledge is delivered to students. The knowledge base includes content knowledge, pedagogic knowledge, pedagogic content knowledge, and support knowledge. Methods of delivering this knowledge to students include the apprentice-expert model, the rationalist model, the case studies model, and the integrative model, which combines aspects of all three approaches.
