A new approach to the characterization of small particles using several elec-tron microscope techniques is outlined. A new high resolution microscope equipped with a TV-pickup system, which is operated under an ultra-high vacuum, is proved to be useful for examining individual small particles. Single crystal structure analysis on individual particles of 7-aluraina is de-scribed. By applying this high resolution electron microscope technique to small particles, their surface structures are observed at atomic resolution. The technique is utilized to examine sintered alumina powders and a hetero-geneous catalyst Structural instability of gold clusters around 20 A in size is seen through a TV-pickup observation system
