Patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) exhibiting disturbances in information processing, including trouble with attention, were studied. Event-related potentials (ERPs)—specifically, the P3 components (P3a, P3b, and P3 working memory {P3wm})—provide an objective, non-invasive, and cost-effective method for evaluating such disturbances. We evaluated the potential clinical utility of P3 components by examining the differences between PTSD and several control groups: normal parti-cipants, non-PTSD patients with trauma, and medicated patients with PTSD.
