The branched chain amino acids (BCAAs) are synthesized by plants, algae, fungi, bacteria and archaea, but not by animals. Therefore, the enzymes of the BCAA biosynthetic pathway are potential targets for the development of herbicides, fungicides and antimicrobial compounds.
