Abstract: We show that in a hybrid optoelectronic correlator, the output signal depends on the relative and absolute phases of the two optical beams used to record interferences, and describe how to control and optimize these phases. Introduction & basic architecture Hybrid Optoelectronic Correlator Optical target recognition using correlators [1] is an important technique for fast verification and identification of images. The Hybrid Optoelectronic Correlator (HOC) [2] recently proposed by us overcomes the material problems of VanderLugt [3] and Joint Transform type correlators using only photo-detectors, Spatial Light Modulator (SLM
