Morton ( I 867) described with remarkable clarity the symptoms of that severe tVJ)e of metatarsalgia which now bears his name: neuralgic pain felt in the sole about the fourth metatarso-phalangeal joint, radiation of pain to the fourth and some-times the third toe, onset of jain with walking or standing, and relief of pain by resting with the shoe discarded.
