ABSTRACT, Presented are the proceedings of a workshop an 7 preparing personnel to effectively intervene in the development and education of Mexican-American hearing-impaired children (0- to 4-years-old). Participants (who were professionals in such disciplines as psychology, medicine, and education) investigated four main topics (examples of conclusions are in parentheses): the knowledges, understandings, and competencies needed by the mediators to intervene effectively (the principle area in which the hearing-impaired child presents problems is communication); the responsibilities and level of preparation desired for the intervener (mothers or surrogate mothers need to function as identifier, coordinator, interpreter, and evaluator); perso...
