The histology of the accessory spleens and spleen are similar. This is illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 which show the pres-ence of lymphoid tissue (white pulp) ad-jacent to an artery in both the accessory spleen and the spleen. Also, accessory spleens exhibit a capsule similar to the spleen's capsule. Accessory spleens have been reported in humans, Olken (1945). Complete splenec-tomy in humans may not always be effec-tive in the presence of accessory spleens, Loeb et al. (1952). Therefore, it is not un-realistic to assume that splenectomy ex-periments in the chick may be confounded by the presence of accessory spleens. Experiments are being designed to study the influence of the accessory spleens on the immune response. We can only speculate concerning the developmental events responsible for the appearance of accessory spleens.
