Local Curriculum Development 1 Local Curriculum Development: A Case Study

There are concerns among educational theorists about the conservation of the environment and the rural life style and teaching students to be active community members. This has led to the publication of research papers on place-based theories, preservice teacher education, and a review of a national placed-based development program. The topic of K-12 curriculum development in rural communities, however, has not been addressed in any of the current research. This document presents a study aiming to provide guidance on local curriculum development for schools interested in creating their own place-based programs to enhance students ' academic achievement. Because every place has its unique problems, place-based education encourages local curriculum development. This study involves five school districts with the formation of a consortium to develop place-based K-12 curriculum activities. (Contains 51 references.)
