Thesis (Ph. D.)--University of Washington, 2006.Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972 is credited for increasing women's participation in competitive sports. At the college level, the number of women athletes competing in intercollegiate sports grew from 30,000 in 1972 to 151,000 by 2001 (Women's Sports Foundation 2002). Although there have been dramatic increases in participation, there has been a sharp decline in the number of women leaders and even fewer women of color in leadership positions.
