A comprehensive two-dimensional echocardio-graphic examination provides useful informa-tion that is superior to M-mode regarding left ventricular chamber sizes and systolic perfor-mance, including ejection fraction. Although we rely on visual estimates, quantitative mea-surements can be particularly valuable in patients with mild or moderate left ventricular systolic dysfunction. Measurements of left ventricular mass by two-dimensional echocardiography is su-perior to M-mode to detect left ventricular hyper-trophy. Two-dimensional echocardiography com-bined with pulsed Doppler echocardiography can be used to accurately measure stroke volume and to assess changes during medical therapy or afte
