IDENTIFIERS *Alice in Wonderland; Historical Background

This paper examines the depiction of Alice in illustrated versions of "Alice in Wonderland " by Lewis Carroll. The primary concern was to determine if the character of Alice had changed historically through the interpretation of different illustrators and to determine what the changes were and what their impact might have on the interpretation of the study. Eighteen different illustrators ' versions of Alice published between 1965 and 1993 were analyzed. The analysis found that, although'the character of Alice was presented differently through time, there were no major changes to the story. With the exception of two multicultural versions, Alice was always drawn in a short dress with a pinafore and sash, even when portrayed as an active girl. There have been no new interpretations of the setting since the original illustrations by John Tenniel. This probably reflects 'hat the original illustrations are considered to be a classic that most illustrators do not want to change drastically. (Contains 15 references.)
