One of the most important purposes of teaching world musics in a general music classroom is to introduce unfa-miliar music to students. Since the Tanglewood sympo-sium, which posited the importance of “music of all periods, styles, forms, and cultures ” (Robert, Charles, Charles, & Wersen, 1967, p. 51), the National Association for Schools of Music made world music training a man-datory part of the music education sequence in 1972, and the National Standards for Art Education has empha-sized the importance of having students understand music in relation to history and culture (Consortium of National Arts Education Associations, 1994).
