To understand, explain, and predict human responses and health care behaviors, nurse researchers are consistently seeking and choosing more comprehensive and collaborative engagement of research participants, particularly those who have limited diverse social interaction and environmental and health care resources. A combination of the vulnerable popu-lations conceptual model (VPCM; Flaskerud & Winslow, 1998) and the community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach provided the foundation for conducting the study.
