This paper investigates the extent to which traditional institutions of governance can contribute to the process of resolving ongoing social conflicts, as well as preventing new ones from erupting. Conflicts within states have proven to be highly destructive, resulting not only in the death of thousands of people but also in the destruction of property, and the disruption of economic, political and socio-cultural activities of affected communities and countries. This paper aims to elucidate the role of traditional institutions in influencing the factors that precipitate social conflict.
