International audienceThe origins of Brissot’s republicanism merit our attention. A true cosmopolitan, he travelled in Switzerland, England, and the US before 1789, developing a knowledge of republicanism as much by observation as by reading the founding fathers of republican theory. The present study focuses on the Patriot Français, from 1789 through the summer of 1791-- date of the first break in royal power-- in order to study the articulation of Brissot’s thought in the context of the decline of the French monarchy and gradual emergence of the republican option.
