TaddÃsà BÃyyÃnà was born in Addis AbÃba in 1936 to his father ato BÃyyÃnà GÃbrà Hiwot and his mother wÃyzÃro KasÃì شÃgga. He did his elementary school at Patriots School, and high school at TÃfÃri MÃkwÃnnƼn School, both in Addis AbÃba. Then he joined the then Addis Ababa University College, where he studied English and graduated with a B.A. degree in 1960. He taught in a high school in Nathreth for a while and then left for the United States to continue his studies. He did a Master߈s degree in Linguistics at Georgetown University in 1964. The following year he met Mulummebet AlÃmu who would be his wife for over 41 years. He worked in the Ministry of Education for two years and then left for Georgetown in 1966 to do a higher degree. He completed his studies with a PhD dissertation on aspects of the verbal phonology of Amharic. After his return home in 1972, TaddÃsà served Addis Ababa University (formerly called aylà ĹƼllase University) and his country at large in differ-ent capacities, among which are the following: Chair of the Literacy Mate
