United States-Japan Cooperative Cancer Research Program 1

ABSTRACT-The formalization of long·standing cooperative joint research efforts between Japanese and U.S. scientists has resulted in the development of specific areas of mutual program interest. The overall future objective of this program is to foster and encourage collaboration of mutual interest and benefit.-J Natl Cancer Inst 58: 455-456, 1977. Since the late 1940's and early 1950's there has been a considerable amount of formal and informal contact between Japanese and American scientists. These early relationships made it possible for succeeding groups of young Japanese biomedical scientists to study not only at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) but at other insti-tutes of the National Institutes of Health and leading American academic and research institutions. The ex-change of Japanese and American scientists reached a high level of activity in all the scientific and technologi-cal disciplines particularly since the 1960's and into the 1970's. Since the passage of the National Cancer Act of 1971, this exchange has increased even further.
