Student Relationship

The mattering scales are designed to assess the perceptions of adult learners about their educational environment. They answer these questions: Do I feel I matter to the institution? and Do I feel noticed, appreciated, welcomed? To determine the extent to which adult learners feel they matter, five scales are designed to assess their perceptions in these dimensions of postsecondary education: administration, advising, interaction with peers, multiple roles, and interaction with faculty. For administrators and faculty, the scales identify critical aspects of an institution's response to the needs of adult learners, where those needs are well met, and where adult learners perceive deficiencies. For adult learners, the scales provide a forum for evaluation of the institutional environment and specific aspects of campus activities. The five-point mattering scales are followed by scoring instructions. A manual fo
