Group members abide by the norms because they believe the norms are proper or because they fear that sanctions will be applied by other group members who do believe in the norms. High-status members apparently have less to fear. We frequently find that nonconforming high-status members of a group are not sanctioned (Wahrman, 1970a). On those rare occasions when they do receive sanctions, those who possess high status may be more severely sanc-tioned than lesser members (Wahrman, 1970b).
