T H E hypothalamus has been suggested as the anatomic locus for many dis-eases and syndromes, two of which are narcolepsy and diabetes insipidus. Evi-dence that diabetes insipidus originates here is convincing. It has been estab-lished both clinically3 and experimentally 10»20 that this syndrome results from a lesion of the hypothalamico-hypophysial tract. Specifically, bilateral destruc-tion of the supraoptic nuclei produces diabetes insipidus although high section of the infundibular stalk may do the same. Removal of the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland does not result in water imbalance. In sleep disturbances of the narcoleptic type we are less certain of the etiology, but scores of modern writers on the subject have been influenced...
