The model is an attempt to capture the dynamics of the interaction between educational tasks in school settings and the assimilative base of the students, that is, the network of active relationships that are brought to the tasks. Three interchange processes are elaborated: automatic skill development, puzzlement leading to reorganization of relationships, and strategy development leading to enrich-ment of relationships. Special stress is placed on the difference between skills and strategies as related to curriculum planning. Practical suggestions for the im-provement of instruction in writing are outlined, stressing the importance of collaborative social interactions among all children, including children labeled as learning dis-abled.
