Norepinephrine metabolism in the brain has been studied by a variety of experimental ap-proaches. In some studies, changes in the con-centration of endogenous catecholamines have been observed after the administration of in-hibitors of amine metabolism and many other drugs. Reserpine (Carlsson et at., 1957; Holz-bauer and Vogt, 1956) and amphetamine (Vogt, 1954) have been shown to lower the norepi-nephrine content of the brain. Monoamine oxi-dave (MAO) inhibition elevates brain norepi-nephrine in the rat (Shore et at., 1957) but not in the cat (Vogt, 1959).
