resistance to antibiotics For the past 40 years penicillins have been the mainstay of anti-gonococcal chemotherapy. Although other antibiotics are used, single dose penicillin therapy, either oral (ampicillin 3-5 g or amqxycillin 3-0 g) or parenteral (penicillin 4-8 mega units) combined with l-0g probene-cid, is still commonly used for antibiotic-sensi-tive gonococcal infections. Penicillin resistance among gonococci results either from penicil-linase production or from changes to the gonococcal cell envelope
