This paper describes a method for teaching introductory biology using a multimedia approach. This methodology aimed to increase student participation, promote independent learning, and enhance computer literacy. Five multimedia tools were used to teach the course. PowerPoint slide shows were used to present lecture material; videodiscs displayed images and animations in electronic slide shows; and CD-ROMs that accompanied the textbook included interactive animations, still images, quizzes, and test banks. All students were required to obtain an e-mail account for correspondence. A survey in which students responded to several questions evaluating the course is also included.
