A new type of apparatus was devised for measuring the stress relaxation of viscoelastic fluids under large deformation. The measurable range of the relaxation modulus was from 10-1 to 10' dyne/cm2. The design and performance of the apparatus were described as well as some typical results obtained for polystyrene solutions in chlorinated diphenyl. I
