A study investigated the way given and new information is conveyed in Korean discourse by applying a taxonomy of given-new information, based on English discourse, to Korean. The taxonomy presumes that information packaging in natural language reflects sender's hypotheses about receiver's assumptions, beliefs, and strategies. Two types of Korean discourse were analyzed using the taxonomy; results were compared with those of the taxonomy's application to English texts. Results generally support the taxonomy and suggest that: (1) maximal use of old entities in discourse is universal regardless of linguistic differences between Korean and English; (2) topic noun phrases (NPs) in Korean Discourse convey the most given information...
