Inflammation is the result of pathogenic organisms invading the human body. Inflammation may affect the whole body and be severe and life threatening. Critically ill patients with sepsis may have progres-sive failure of organ systems that could lead to death. While teams of emergency room personnel and the staffs of intensive care units (ICUs) are responsible for the initial stabilization and resuscitation of the patient with sepsis, nutritional support is an aspect of clinical care that is fundamental to recovery.
