This arti cle looks at how two offices changed their infor mal work rela tion ships and pat-terns in response to a major tech no log i cal inno va tion in their field. This induc tive study involves a cross-case anal y sis with field stud ies cov er ing a two-year period. The research applies the mod els sug gested by social action the ory to help explain out comes. By the end of this study, one office had lost its fund ing and was elim i nated, while the other has sur-vived and grown.
