A COMPARISON OF SHORT FORMS OF THE INTELLIGENCE SCALE FOR CHILDREN- REVISED IN THE SCREENING OF GIFTED REFERRALS

A total of 142 full scale individual intelligence tests were rescored to compare the V and BD dyad of the WISC-R with the full scale WISC-R and the limen method of scoring of the S-B with the full scale S-B. Tests had been administered to students who had been referred for possible inclusion in a gifted program. The correlation of the limen short form and the full scale S-B was. 78 while the V and BD dyad and full scale WISC-R correlation was.92. Results suggest that the V and BD dyad of the WISC-R may be a useful screening device for superior students. With the recent trend toward implementation of programs for in-tellectually gifted students, ‘it has become increa~Î1}gly important that we examine various means of reducing the length of time required for identification of these students. Individualized in-telligence tests are usually an integral part of this process. However, it is not practical to administer an individual intelligence test to all possible candidates for a gifted program. This study directs itself to the contribution to be made by short form intelligence tests as a por-tion of a screening process. Short forms of the Stanford-Binet (S-B) and the Wechsler scales have been extensively studied almost from their inception.
