The metabolism of 3-(2-dimethylaminoethyl)benzolbjthiophene has been studied in vivo and in vitro in rats. The results indicate the major pathways of metabolism to be 6-hydroxylation. N-dealkylation. and oxidation by monoamine oxidase. No evidence for sulfoxidation was obtained. Metabolites were identified by combinations of mass spectrometry. nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. thin-layer chromatography, and liquid scintillation counting
