Freshwater food web studies: a plea for multiple tracer approach Food webs are complex systems of interactions between ecosystem species. Beyond the direct analysis of stomach contents, stable isotopes of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) have been used widely to evaluate these trophic relationships and calculate the relative contribution of food sources to a consumer’s diet using mixing models. However, there are still some constraints on the use of these traditional tracers that limit their output.
