Graphene dispersions, produced in a chemically assisted exfoliation process, have been treated with two new pyrene derivatives that may adsorb to the graphene in a non-covalent supramolecular fashion that does not cause irreversible damage to the graphene π system. The initial qualitative studies by absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy have shown that the desired interaction indeed takes place, results that are important for future developments of functional materials based on high-quality graphene
