OZONE MAXIMA OVER SOUTHERN AFRICA: CHARACTERISTICS AND MECHANISMS

The topic to be examined in this research cpncerns the relationship between day-to-day weather and ozone maxima (high ozone levels) over southern Africa. This research initiative began with a preliminary investigation into the nature of total column ozone amounts over South Africa, in which, an attempt was made to link variations in total column ozone to changing surface weather conditions. The results of this study were submitted as a Bachelor of Science Honours dissertation in September 1989. Further investigation into the relationship between total column ozone and changing weather conditions was undertaken and the results submitted as a Master of Science dissertation entitled "Spatial and temporal variations in total ozone over South Africa".
