Denitrification was measured in intact sediment cores and in homogenised slurries using membrane inlet mass spectrometry. Dissolved concentrations of 0,, N,, N,O and CO, were simultaneously monitored. Using a 0.8 mm diameter needle probe, a comparison was made of the gas profiles of intact cores obtained under different conditions, i.e. with air or argon as the headspace gas and after the addition of nitrate and/or a carbon source to the sediment surface. 0, was detectable to a depth of 1 cm under a headspace of air and the depth at which the maxima of denitrification products occurred was 1.5-2 cm.
