In the words of McMichael (2013, p. 45), neoliberalism is a savage regime that is “premised on the redistribution, rather than production, of wealth. ” The inevitable result of this redistri-bution is a deepening gulf between rich and poor around the world, with an exponential concentration of wealth in the top one percent of the population, which now owns 46 percent all global assets (CCPA, 2013). To describe this phenomenon, geographer David Harvey (2006) coined the concept of accumulation by dispossession – accumulating private wealth by dispossessing the major-ity of their public wealth. This evocative concept captures the essence of neoliberalism and provides a beachhead from which to launch further critiques and practical alternatives
