Survey on Drug Abuse (NHSDA). Several important changes to the NHSDA in 1999 and 2000 affected the estimates of drug use, as well as the estimates for dependence, abuse, and needing and receiving treatment. Following the introduction, the report is organized as follows. Chapter 2 offers estimates of the prevalence and patterns of substance dependence and abuse in the nation. Chapter 3 provides estimates of the prevalence and patterns of the receipt of treatment for problems related to substance use. Chapter 4 discusses the need for and receipt of treatment specifically for problems associated with illicit drug use.
