The endothelium is an interesting target tomodify cardiovascular disease. In addition to the well-known autacoids such as nitric oxide and prostaglandins, a third endothelial pathway exists which relaxes vascular smooth muscle through hyperpolarization (endo-thelium-dependent hyperpolarization-type dilation).
