A novel theoretical framework for analysis of indentation of magnetostrictives, based upon a linear material response model, is developed. The governing set of partial differential equations is solved for the case of an incompressible material, resulting in a solution which predicts the relationship between the change in magnetic flux and the applied load near the area of contact between the indenter and the specimen. This relationship (referred to as a <D-P curve) and the relationship between the applied load and the indenter displacement (a P-h curve) together give a "signature " of the magnetostrictive response of a given material.
