Liver resection is an essential component of treatment for many patients with primary or secondary liver malignancies, but there is a finite amount of liver that can be removed (70%) to avoid deficient regeneration and liver dysfunc-tion (Helling, 2006; Breitenstein et al., 2009; Garcea and Maddern, 2009). Liver regeneration is also important for both donors and recipients of small-for-size liver grafts, a type of surgery which could significantly increase the donor pool but which is not widely performed pri-marily due to concerns of morbidity and mor-tality in donors (Clavien et al., 2007).
