Self-presentation has often been described as comprising strategically controlled behaviors where people deliberately attempt to project a desired identity image to others. With little doubt, self-presentation can involve this form of conscious tactic, but as many theorists have posited, self-presentation is just as likely to consist of an automatic, nonconscious compo-nent (Baumeister, 1982; Paulhus, 1993; Schlenker, 2003).
