DESCRIPTION OF PROBLEM

Commercial poultry processingplants use large quantities of water in scalding, washing, carcass cooling, and transporting offal. The level of BOD in the water must be reduced before the water can be released into a sewer system. Currently, wastewater streams are screened to remove large particulate material. The remaining BOD-rich water is collected in a large equalizing tank to help stabilize pH values and control peak flows.
