Heavy metal pollution in the environment has toxicological importance, because heavy metals have been linked to food chain contamination which has resulted in acute and chronic toxic effects on humans. Plants such as lettuce and radish have been shown to respond to heavy metals in soils and are valuable in assessing the toxicity and uptake of heavy metals in soils. These toxicity and uptake studies may also determine potential human exposure through a diet including these food crops.
