The metres in Middle Indo-Aryan as well as in classical Sanskrit are classified into the following three groups according to the peculiarities of the metrical schemes: Aksaracchandas, Matrachandas and Ganacchandas. With the use of a metrical analysis program coded by Think Pascal™ ' on Macintosh ™ personal computers, we have exhaustively investigated all these important metres: the Sloka and the modified Sloka metres which both belong to the Aksaracchandas; the Tristubh and JagatT which belong to the Aksaracchandas; the Vaitallya and Aupacchandasaka which belong to the Matrachandas, and the Arya and Old Arya which belong to Ganacchandas.
