The contention that the future of sport and physical education can be shaped by its history is the foundation of this discussion. The paper begins with a brief mention of six social forces at work and ten concomitant professional concerns. It then presents Heilbroner's concept of the future as history; discusses the idea of progress; suggests some implications for sport and physical education based on Heilbroner's concept; discusses the concept of progress in relation to the United States and the American dream; and, finally, draws several conclusions.
