This Update in Nephrology and Hypertension addressescommon clinical problems facing general internists and nephrologists. I have included papers that presented a new way of classifying chronic kidney disease and expanded our knowledge of the risks associated with this diagnosis, estab-lished a new association between chronic kidney disease and the metabolic syndrome, and compared the equations that are used to define chronic kidney disease. I have also included noteworthy research regarding the prevention and treatment of diabetic nephropathy; hyperkalemia; and the prevention of contrast agent–induced nephropathy, which is a concern for many internists and nephrologists
