Abstract: In this thesis, I investigate if inequality has a significant impact on crime rates in Latin America and the Caribbean for the period from 1950 to 2010. Several studies in the past have found robust correlation between indicators of inequality and crime incidence, even when accounting for confounding factors and country-fixed effects. However, a major drawback of those studies is that they ignore the possibility of spurious regression in panel data. By pre-testing the data for unit roots and adjusting the model accordingly, I avoid the possibility of nonsense regression.
