Although the share of international migrants in the world’s population has remained remarkably stable at around 3 per cent over the past 50 years (UNDP, 2009), international migration has increasingly become more complex and diverse with the increasing mobility, as well as with the new types of migrants such as ‘transit migrants ’ (Vertovec, 1999) and ‘environmental refugees’ (Myers, 2005). The growing complexity and diversity in migration have been driven both by the globalization of labour, commodity and capital and by the revolutions in transport an
