Reserpine reduces the tissue catecholamine level (Bertler et at, 1956). The diminution of the cardiovascular action of tyramine in animals treated with reserpine and its restoration by norepinephrine infusion led Burn and Rand (1958) to the conclusion that tyramine owes its effects chiefly to a release of endogenous cate-cholamine. Additional evidence for this concept has recently been provided by the demonstration of norepinephrine release by tyramine and the correlation of tyramine tachyphylaxis with a diminished norepinephrine release (Axeirod et at., 1962). Methyldopa also diminishes the tissue cate-cholamine concentration (Hess et al., 1961
