ABSTRACT: Tests were conducted to validate the model and the CHAR computer code previously developed for calculating the thermomechanical behavior of carbon-phenolic and carbon-carbon composites exposed to high temperatures. Temperature distributions in and damage of rapidly heated carbon-phenolic composites were measured. The data com-pared well to the results calculated by the code. Parametric studies were also performed, the results of which yield physical insights into the ply-lift phenomenon observed in solid rocket motor exit cone linings, and provide a guide in the design of parts made of carbon-phenolic and carbon-carbon composites. 1
